10 months into the pandemic and we are yet to comprehend the offerings of past year. Economic crash, countless deaths, and a ray of hope are all part of the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the past year, a lot has changed. From an individual’s perspective, technology – as if it wasn’t important previously, is now indispensable to making our lives livable. Because of the restrictions that came with the pandemic, we all have been compelled to embrace the technological advancements that have made our lives easier, in some way or another over the years.

If you have also been asked to “Work from home” then you too understand what we mean by remote work. All of this just didn’t happen in a New York minute; instead we have come a long way since Coronavirus was declared as a pandemic in March 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Hybrid working schedules

From working nights in office to staying awake in front of screens at home, staying 24 x 7 online is now considered normal as people around the world have turned their homes into offices. There are speculations of a new working schedule known as the Hybrid working schedule where employees are asked to work 3 days from home and need to come into office for the remaining work week or it could be the other way around depending on company’s policy and nature of business.

New Guidelines

Except the essential services, nearly every sector, government or private went on to work from home as government imposed nation-wide lockdown and social distancing was brought into effect. Centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) asked everyone to keep washing their hands with bar soap and water for 20 seconds to stop the spread of virus. Additionally, people were asked to wear masks in public and stay 6 feet apart from each other.

Something for Everyone

All of these guidelines and the implementation of well sought-after precautions lead to creation of “work from home”. From giant corporations to small scale businesses, everyone realized that it was not such a bad decision, as for companies it meant utilization of fewer resources and less expenditure. On the other hand for employees it meant flexible working hours and more time with family.

Is it practical?

For people who are working in the information technology (IT) sector and other associated fields like BPO, Software export, Digital marketing, and others, work from home might prove to be the ultimate answer to burn-out problems. However, businesses, where physical presence and interaction is necessary, took a nose-dive in pandemic due to absence of employees and hindered business processing.

So sectors where business flow remained obstacle-free even after slow internet connections and late work submissions, which sometimes happen due to internet connectivity, working from home is completely practical and frankly, beneficial in the long run too.

A close inspection

If you were to look at infrastructure of modern-day businesses, you’ll be amazed to find out that most of the work is done via machines and by that we not only mean computers and laptops but also rapid processing manufacturing units. Where this has cut down the man-power needed, it has also made work easy. Therefore, most of the businesses can run easily by “working from home”.

Prayers answered?

Some of the smart tech and social networking companies like Google, Facebook, and twitter have even asked their employees to work from home for as long as they want to. Following in the footsteps of these tech giants some local companies have also given their employees a choice to work from home or come into office, pretty amazing days for those who are Home sick!

Gender equality

According to Melinda gates, Co-chair, Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, gender equality might have taken a hard-hit in terms of equal pay and employment chances with the work from home schedules as women around the world were already managing households before the pandemic.

With nearly whole of the World now sitting at home, their work has increased multi-fold and this must turn heads in the financial sector.  She thought of the current arrangement as unsustainable because World would be missing out on Girl Power literally!

With vaccines now rolling out, countries have started to reopen. However a large workforce is still operating from home because of all the reasons mentioned above. Therefore it would be safe to say that COVID has not only boosted the adoption of remote work but it has influenced the creation of “work from home”.
